Weather-worn building in Bristol, RI

I love walking around Bristol, RI, on a September day or riding my bike down early on a Sunday morning in the summer for breakfast or coffee and a bagel. It’s a great town with lots of character and community spirit — and lots of grand homes and old factory buildings that have stories to tell.

Bristol has THE oldest and best 4th of July celebration (if you can get into town before the roads are clogged with traffic). This year the town marks the day with its 226th (yes, that’s right) parade. It’s the real thing with marching bands and drum corps from across the country. If you’re looking for something to do, here’s the website.

Bristol's parade route, which follows Hope Street (Rte. 114) is painted with a red, white and blue stripe, and the city has to get special permission to do this.
