What are you reading?

book lover

Check out my “What I’m reading” section on this blog. I’ve added comments about two books I recently finished.

And then please tell me what you are reading — and what book has stayed with you long after having read it. And why.

  1. I’ve started reading Cannery Row by John Steinbeck & I’m loving it! Greg and I just returned from Monterey, CA and I really wanted to have the chance to read the book before our trip to the actual Cannery Row. Oh well, better late… 🙂

    • I’ve read several by Steinbeck, but not this one. I will have to check it out. I recently read his memoir of his travels across the U.S. with his dog, Charley. It was wonderful to see the country through his eyes some 50 years ago. We have changed so much.

      • Wonderful! Travels With Charley is actually on my summer reading list! I also want to get The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman (having just read a great review). ~Enjoy your summer reads!

  2. Here are the main ones I am currently reading:

Capitale de la douleur – Paul Éluard

13 pas dans le sable – Linda Bastide

First Among Sequels – Jasper Fforde

One of the most profound books for me, I read as a child. It wasn’t really written for children but c’est moi! It was written by a reporter who shaved his head, darkened his skin and went into the deep south to see what it would be like to be a “Negro”. The book was BLACK LIKE ME by John Howard Griffin.

  3. I remember reading Black Like Me, too, and liking it. Did you ever read Black Boy? That is a powerful book that I taught often to high school students — who couldn’t believe we ever treated human beings so horribly.

  4. Unfortunately, hatred is still out there. I didn’t read Black Boy, I hadn’t heard of it until now.

You may have noticed the first two books that I listed are poetry and are helping me with my french.
