Fleeting

Fleeting

Small shadows dart in
and out of the waves.
Tide pulls them. Setting sun gilds them.
They call to us as we fold up chairs
and collect empty sand pails.
Just a little longer.

The shadows grow,
and we shake our heads. It’s late.
Their laughter lifts like seabirds
across a stretch of empty beach.
Suddenly, the air
is full of wings.

  1. The last line really pulls it together. I need to go to the beach more. I guess the crowd and parking keep me away. The winter beach is the one I love.

    1. This was actually written awhile ago for your photo of 3 little boys playing at the beach as the day is falling away. I like September and October at the beach or early evening. Can’t do that sun anymore.

  2. Oh I know that feeling so well….there’s no rush to leave, we don’t need to be home yet…..lets just stay till the sun goes down 🙂 the allure of the beach and the restless sea!
